James William Harris

February 19, 1921 — October 19, 2016

“Uncle James” was born February 19, 1921 in Chipley Florida and died on October 18, 2016 in Flowers Hospital, Dothan, Alabama.             He completed the ninth grade and worked at the Cotton Mill in Enterprise. He joined the Army in 1942 and was stationed at Fort McClellan, Alabama.  His job in the military was working with heavy weapons including NCO 812, MM rifle.  In 1943 he was maneuverd to Tennessee, 1944 went overseas to Holbert, Tasmania and Perth, Australia, 1945 transferred to Bombay, India with 236th Engineer Combat Battalion. He served overseas for 2 years and 13 days.             Among his military medals were, Good Conduct Medal AR600-58; American Service Medal; Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars; World War II Victory Medal and Purple Heart Medal.             After being honorably discharged from the Army he worked as a tree trimmer with the Alabama Power Company. From 1946 to 1972 he worked as a firefighter at Fort Rucker, serving as Station Captain at Lowe Field, Shell Field and retired from Cairns Field as Station Captain.             He was married to Myrtle McCall for 44 years.             His favorite pastime was saltwater fishing.
