Gloria Arlene Johnson Ellers passed away peacefully at her home in Enterprise on Tuesday night, October 11, 2016 at the age of 94.Visitation will be Friday night, October 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Searcy Funeral Home. Funeral, service will be at St. Luke United Methodist Church on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Interment service will take place on Monday at 11 a.m. EDT at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, Seale, Alabama.In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial gift be made to one of the following organizations: St. Jude Childrens Hospital, the SOS Animal Shelter in Enterprise, AL, or the Enterprise Ladies Golf Association.Gloria was born September 16, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois. Upon graduating high school, she pursued a singing career until she met her husband, U.S. Army Captain Conway Ellers at Fort Benning, Georgia. They were married August 30, 1947. Gloria was then officially an Army wife.At the time, Gloria was an accomplished tennis player and also enjoyed bowling and skeet. However, when Conway came back from a tour in Korea in 1952, he found he was now married to a golfer. The family moved around the U.S. and overseas before retiring to Enterprise in 1964, and thats when Gloria began playing competitive golf.Gloria was a long-time member of the Enterprise Country Club and won many womens golf tournaments. She won five Alabama Senior Amateur tournaments and was inducted into the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. She shared her love of golf with everyone and mentored many newcomers to the game. Even as her health declined, she enjoyed spending her time on the course, riding shotgun with her daughter Jacque.She is preceded in death by her husband Conway, brother Howard Froggy Johnson, her mother Agnes and her father Forrest. She is survived by her daughter Jacque Griffin (Johnny), her son Conway Ellers (Carole), four grandchildren: Brian Jones (Tina), Scott Jones, Courtney Ellers Conklin (Mark), Melanie Ellers and three great-grandchildren: Erin Jones, Juliette Conklin, Bernadette Conklin, and her loyal dog, Sadie. Gloria was a loving mother and a great friend to all.We offer a special thank you to Gentiva Home Health and Hospice for their care and assistance.
