Alfred attended Ozark High School and was known in the area for being a fine baseball player. He attended a tryout for the St. Louis Cardinals at Eagle Stadium in Ozark, Alabama, and was subsequently invited to a Cardinals training camp in Florida. Having not told his mother that he attended a tryout for the Cardinals; and being 17 at the time, she refused to let him go! But the possibility of being able to go on to play for the Cardinals was a cherished memory to him. He went on to coach many little league baseball teams, football teams, and every team his daughter ever played on. He also played and coached softball well into his 50’s.

On December 22, 1967, he married the love of his life Kaye Wesley McLean of Ino, Alabama. In 1971, he welcomed the other love of his life, daughter Tammy Kaye McLean. During this time, he served with the Alabama National Guard, and began work at Fort Rucker, Alabama, on the flight line for the Huey and Blackhawk helicopters. He was a member of the gospel group, “The Gospelaires,” that made two albums and traveled the southeast performing at churches. Most of the time, this travel occurred in his beloved 1967 red Camaro.

Alfred was committed to and served the Enterprise community throughout his life in various roles. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church for 47 years where he taught Preschool Sunday School with his wife Kaye up until the time of his death. He was also honored by the Mayor and City of Enterprise in 2023 for serving the senior citizens of Enterprise by hosting a dance and playing guitar every Friday night for 28 years. He was also a volunteer for Gentiva Hospice for years and a lifelong member of the Masons, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and Shriners. He also was an avid water skier, and played at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop in Nashville, TN. He cheered diligently for the University of Alabama football team and the Braves. Everywhere he went, he was quick to tell of how proud he was of his daughter, son-in-law Jeff, and grandsons Marshall and Manning.

No role in life was more important to him than that of husband, father, and grandfather. Alfred is survived by his wife, Kaye Wesley McLean; their daughter, Dr. Tammy Kaye McLean Serff (Dr. Jeffery M. Serff); and grandsons, Marshall McLean Serff and Manning Paul Serff. He is also survived by many extended family members.

He is preceded in death by his parents Lula Bell and Willie Daniel McLean; two brothers, Henry Charles McLean and Kells McLean: four sisters, Evelyn McLean Reed (Robert), Eldrith McLean Stutler (Fred), Belinda McLean Linnebary (Jack), and Katie Joyce McLean Hendricks (Ralph).
