Cw4 (Ret.) Michael Patrick Mccurdy

CW4 (Ret.) Michael Patrick McCurdy, age 67, of Enterprise, AL, passed away, Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Flowers Hospital. Mike began his military career in 1971 when he was drafted and shipped to Vietnam. He was in Vietnam for 2 months in Dak To, at Fire Base Charging Bull where his platoon was over run and an evacuation was ordered. Mike jumped on the evacuation helicopter and was unfortunately shot through the bottom of the belly of the fuselage and spent 6 months in the hospital learning to walk again. After his injury and rehabilitation he continued his career and was assigned to the 173rd Airborne & 82nd Airborne until 1975. Fort Sill had found a force to mold young aspiring men and women into fine soldiers when Mike became a Drill Sargent in the Artillery at Fort Sill, OK where he was an E5, and within 4 years he made E7. In 1979 he made the decision to advance his skills and join the Army’s elite with training at the Helo Flight School at Fort Rucker, Al. Graduating in 1980 he was assigned to a Dust Off unit. The esteemed 4/507th Medical Company at Fort Sill, Ok. In the 4-1/2 years at Ft. Sill he became an instructor pilot and a night vision goggle instructor pilot. He flew 2500 hrs in that unit then was assigned to a general support company in South Korea. When he left South Korea he attended test pilot school and as assigned to Fort Rucker, Al. In 1989 he was assigned to the Arctic Test Center in Fort Greeley, AK, then went to Fort Eustis, VA. In 1994 the school was moved to Fort Rucker where he was assigned to the Director of Standardization & Evaluation as a maintenance test pilot. He retired from the military in 1998 after 28 years of active duty, then he transitioned to a civilian maintenance test pilot at Fort Rucker until his retirement 2 years ago, in 2019. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 9, 2021 at Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel with Rev. Mike Medley officiating. Mike is survived by his loving family which includes his wife, Kathy McCurdy, Enterprise, AL; 4 daughters, Heather McDaniels, Enterprise, AL; Corcynthia Williams, Hillsgrove, PA; Mikayla Zimmermann (Ryan) Fayetteville, NC; Shanndel McCurdy, San Antonio, TX; a son, Emmitt Wells McCurdy II (Jessica) Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Sterling, Kayden, Rhys, Trystin, Skylar, Levi, Kaitlyn, Georgia, Jacklyn; sisters, Diana Drapeau (Norman); Kim McCurdy; a brother, Bob McCurdy.
