Tommy, as he was known by everyone, was a loving father to all his children and a great provider for his family. He was soft-spoken and gentle, a source of encouragement, advice, and guidance that will be missed by us all--a man who knew the Lord and put his trust, faith, and hope in him. Tommy served this great Nation that he loved for some fifty-five years with honor and distinction. He enlisted into the Army and began his career in 1962 with tours in Vietnam, Korea, and Germany. He was a Bronze Star recipient and received many other accommodations and acknowledgements. He retired for the first time in 1986 with the rank of E-8 Master Sergeant. But he wasn't ready to sit down, as he began a new career in civil service. He stepped back onto Fort Rucker ready to serve as he performed many different roles over the next 31 years, from 1986 through 2017, when at 75 years of age he decided to slow down... but just a little, for he loved to garden, fish, and was quite the craftsman in the wood shop. He is preceded in death by his parents Adelina and Serafin Barela, precious grandparents Juan and Manuelita Padilla, brothers Yancy Barela and Michael Barela, and son Lee Fisher.
