Born and raised in Elba, Alabama, Fred was “one of those Mallory boys”. One of 9 children born to Wade and Doris Mallory, Freddy, as he was called by those who knew him in his younger years, was a proud graduate of Elba High School. After graduation he attended Troy State University. While at Troy, Fred enjoyed (perhaps too much) participating in in the Sound of the South Marching Band, Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Phi Mu Alpha where he made lifelong friends and memories. One friend he made while working at Jacks in Troy invited him home for dinner with his family. It was during this fortuitous dinner that Fred met the woman who would become the greatest love of his life, his wife of 44 years, Sandy Coker Mallory. Fred and Sandy married on June 7, 1980, and together had two children Leanne and Freddy Jr. In 2015, Fred was excited to welcome daughter-in- law, Stef, to the family. In 2019, he was happy to officially welcome son-in-law Clay to the family. He became a Papa in 2019 and again in 2022 to “his babies”, Lucy Beth and Hinton.
During their marriage, Fred and Sandy lived in Dothan, Tallahassee, Dothan(again), Prattville, Elba, and Enterprise. His career was the catalyst for their adventures and throughout their moves they made friends and connections across the southeast.
Until his retirement in 2018, Fred worked as a food broker. He enjoyed his career and loved working with people. Although his focus was on food and restaurant sales, his favorite part of his job was connecting with people from all over the southeast. He never met a stranger, and he always hoped to make a connection with people. He wanted people to have a positive feeling after he interacted with them. He believed in looking people in the eye and offering them a smile. His voicemail said it best “have a nice day and remember to smile-it’s contagious!”
Fred loved music in all its forms, and he especially enjoyed singing. He had a beautiful bass voice which he used in choir, in his gospel quartet Psalm 4, and as a worship leader. He loved Florida State Football (yes even this year), and he proudly wore his Seminole attire even when visiting his family in Tuscaloosa. He loved his family and friends with all his heart. As one of 9 children, he always believed in the importance of family and shared his belief that nothing is more important than family with anyone who would listen. Most importantly, Fred loved Jesus with all of his heart. Throughout his illness, both with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and then cancer, Fred prayed that the Lord would be glorified in all things. Regardless of his situation, Fred wanted to show the love of Jesus through his actions and his deeds. He was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, papa, brother, nephew, uncle, and friend. He leaves a hole in the heart of all who loved him.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Wade C. and Doris Boswell Mallory; brothers Bill Mallory and Charles Mallory; two nephews, Justin Mallory and Norman Bean.
