Horatio Moultrie Sessions, Sr.

November 22, 1923 — March 27, 2018

Moultrie Sessions, Sr., was born on November 22, 1923; the son of Lewe and Mary Sessions. He grew up in Enterprise, Alabama where he attended elementary school and high school. He had two beloved sisters who preceded him in death: Mary Pat Sessions West and Gloria Sessions Ventress. He attended the University of Alabama where he obtained an undergraduate degree in business and later a Master’s in Business Administration.   He attended and was a member of First Baptist Church in Enterprise. He joined the church on August 5, 1934 was a faithful member for over 83 years. At the time of his death he was the longest serving member of the church. He was a Sunday School teacher, a deacon, chairperson of numerous committees and a member of several pastor search committees. He always gave firm support to the eleven pastors who served during his lifetime. He, with dedication, conveyed his faith and his principles to his family.   A significant event in his life was his service in the US army in World War II. He was a part of the 75th Infantry Division and saw service in France, Belgium and Germany. As a soldier he participated in the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and the crossing of the Rhine River in March 1945. He always was quick to point out that he was not a hero but was just doing the same service as rendered by so many other young people of his generation.   He returned from the army to finish his education at the University of Alabama where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. After he graduated from business school, he returned to work in his family business, Sessions Company, Inc. He served as President from 1951 to 1992 and Chairman of the Board for many years after that. He was a capable businessman who dedicated himself to serving peanut growers, customers and employees and at the same time growing a profitable business.   He was active in community affairs being a long time Rotarian and very active in the Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations. He took particular pride in being a board member of the Citizen’s Bank of Enterprise.   In 1949, in a chance encounter at the house of Mrs. Robbie Sessions, his aunt; he met the magnificent love of his life, Jean Carroll Sessions. They were married for 66 wonderful years until her passing just six months ago in October 2017. They were blessed with four children; Moultrie Sessions, Jr. (Mo), Samuel Yancey Sessions (Sam), Frances Carroll Sessions Flowers (Carroll) and Susan Sessions Brannum (Susan). He often said he couldn’t live without Jean, or “Jeanie” as he called her, and ultimately he did not.   He is survived by his four children: Mo (Karyn), Sam (Angie), Carroll (William) and Susan. He also has eight grandchildren: Frances Flowers Ennis, Grace Flowers, Miranda Flowers, Will Flowers, Keith Brannum, Jean Brannum, Sarah Brannum and Katie Brannum. Surviving also is a great granddaughter: Clara Jean Ennis. He has 5 nieces and nephews: Lewe and Sam West, Bill Ventress, Blan Ventress and Anne Ventress Smith. Special people (among many) to him were his neighbors: the Brunsons, the Millers, the Ezells, the Waites, the Herods, the Cassadys, the Beckhams and finally his friend Anthony O’Neal.   During the last five years he and Jean Sessions had some very compassionate, skilled caregivers. The family wishes to give them profuse thanks: Lisa Howard, Mary Kelley, Angie Brinkley, Sarah Jones, Tasha Bradshaw, Kristy Griswold, Teresa Griswold, Connie Young and from Home Instead, Carole Fitzgerald, Marilyn Lee and Hannah Farris.   The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church fellowship hall on Friday, March 30th beginning at 2:30 P.M. with a memorial service at 4:00 P.M. in the church sanctuary. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Coffee County Baptist Vineyard Christian Retreat Center, PO Box 127, New Brockton, Alabama 36351.
