Jacquelyn "Jackie" Dyar Thompson

September 5, 1940 — February 13, 2019

Jacquelyn “Jackie” Dyar Thompson, age 78, of Enterprise, AL, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at her home. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 15, 2019, from 3:00 – 6:00 at Searcy Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at Meadowlawn Cemetery on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at 10:00. Jacquelyn, a lifetime resident of Enterprise, loved her family and her community. She was affectionately known to many as Grandmother (and her husband Harrell as Pop), Ms. Jackie, and Big Jack. She was known as a second mother to so many. She was a tireless worker who loved to learn and to be involved. Her working career began as a teenager in her father’s shirt factory, Searcy Company. She was a co-owner of the Tree House and Bromberg’s, local retail shops. She also managed Westgate Shopping Center, and she worked as bookkeeper for Easy Pay Tire Store. As an agent for Century 21 for 27 years, she was one of Enterprise’s best ambassadors, welcoming and helping hundreds of people make a home in Enterprise. She served as president of Wiregrass Board of Realtors in 1997, received the Realtor of the Year Award in 1998, and received numerous awards throughout the years. One of Jacquelyn’s greatest loves was being a member of the Enterprise City Council. She was a member of the Council from 1984 to 1989. In 1989, she was appointed as the first female mayor of Enterprise. During this time, she was able to do what she loved best, working alongside people who loved Enterprise and who wanted to see Enterprise thrive. In 1990, Jacquelyn was chosen as Enterprise’s Woman of the Year. She humbly accepted this honor to represent the town and the people she loved so well. She also loved Enterprise City School System and enjoyed being actively involved in the schools as a parent and grandparent. She was truly one of Enterprise High School’s biggest supporters and fans. She was a life-long member of First Baptist church and a member of the Phyllis Talmadge Sunday School Class. She was one of the first members of the Twentieth Century Misses Chautauqua Club and an active member of the Twentieth Century Chautauqua Club.Jacquelyn was a strong supporter of the Enterprise Recreational Center. She was a familiar face to so many children at the gym and baseball fields. She enjoyed watching her sons and grandsons and cheering on every athlete. She also loved the arts. As a member of the Coffee County Arts Alliance, she enjoyed performances of all kinds. She attended local dance recitals for 54 years. Watching her daughter and granddaughters were a joy for her. She relished the opportunity to be able to see so many girls enjoy dance. She served on numerous boards and committees throughout the years. She was a lifetime member of the YMCA and served as board president from 1983-84. Currently she served on the Coffee County Family Services Board.She was a role model to all who knew her. Her willingness to love, work, encourage, support, forgive, and sacrifice leave a legacy to family and friends. Jacquelyn was preceded in death by her parents, James Guy and Eleanor Searcy Dyar, and her brother, Jim Dyar. Survivors include her husband, Harrell Thompson, Enterprise; four children, Robert Harrell (Rob) Thompson, Jr., McDonough, GA; Terri Averett (Bruce) Enterprise; Jim Thompson (Bev) Enterprise; Greg Thompson (Jodee) Enterprise; grandchildren, Hadley Thompson McAlister (Brandon); John Robert Thompson; Ashley Averett, Eric Averett,, Sid Thompson, Ele Thompson, Stacy Lin Thompson, Dyar Thompson; great-grandchildren, Finley Kate McAlister and Eason McAlister; numerous cousins. Honorary pallbearers will be John Robert Thompson, Eric Averett, Sid Thompson, Dyar Thompson, David Dyar, Wade Dyar, and Zach Dyar.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Enterprise YMCA, P.O.
