Mary Lucile Cain

September 9, 1921 — December 16, 2017

Mary Lucile Cain, age 96, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter in Enterprise on Saturday, December 16, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Enterprise with Rev. Tonya Elmore officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery in Dothan with Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory directing. The family will receive friends at Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory on Monday, December 18, 2017 from 4 to 6 PM. James Ruffin and Martha Gilchrist Smith of Greensboro, FL, welcomed their daughter, Lucile, on September 25, 1921, in Greensboro, FL. She attended a one-room schoolhouse there, and in 1939, graduated from Quincy High School. Lucile graduated from the Florida State School of Nursing in Chattahoochee, FL, as an RN. With WWII underway, Lucile and a friend enlisted in the US Army in July, 1943. They were stationed at Ft. Robinson, Arkansas, for basic training, before being sent overseas to Abergevenny, Wales at the 279th Station Hospital. She served until 2/25/46, and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. In December, 1947, she met the love of her life, William Hollon (Bill) Cain, of Enterprise, in Quincy, FL. They were married May 23, 1948, and were married for 53 years before his death in 2001. Bill and Lucile lived in Dothan, AL, briefly before moving to Geneva in 1956, where they resided for 45 years. They were active members of the First UMC in Geneva. Lucile worked as a Private Duty nurse in Dothan, but was hired as Director of Nursing at Wiregrass Hospital in Geneva in 1958. She retired in 1983 after 25 years of employment. Lucile was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bill, a sister, Julia, an infant brother, and an infant son, William Hollon Cain, II. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Sue Cain, Enterprise; special nephews and nieces Stan (Theresa) Cain, Dothan, Nancy (Ben) Baker, Ozark, Celeste (Tommy) Horne, Dothan, and Glen (Betty) Cain, Dothan; special “adopted” daughter, Julia Harrison, Birmingham, and special family friends Amanda Douglas, Enterprise and Matthew Hughes, Marianna; many friends and former co-workers. Lucile Cain was a devoted wife and mother with a wonderful wit. She loved her family, Alabama sports, especially football, watching Fox News, her special game shows, watching golf, and her dog, Lulu. She will be greatly missed. Her family would like to thank her devoted sitters, Julie Spears and Carolyn Matherly, as well as DaySpring Hospice for their care, and the members of Enterprise First United Methodist Church, who adopted her as a member.
