Sofronia Hickox Childs age 87, of Level Plains, AL passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at her home. Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, October 1 at Providence Baptist Church. with Rev. Tony Deese, Rev. Chad Hixon, and Rev. Tommy Green officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 1:00 P.M. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church Building Fund, 10 Providence Lane, Daleville, AL 36322. Sofronia (Fronie) loved Jesus and in her later years was challenged to read the Bible from cover to cover. She read hers 3 times. She loved her church, where she taught children in Sunday School. Fronie had the gift of hospitality and made everyone feel welcome in her home, particularly around the dining table. She loved to cook and delighted in serving her family and friends a variety of her delicious cakes, fresh vegetables, homemade candy, and “Fronie Cakes” (fried cornbread). One of her favorite things to do with Johnny was to go fishing. She could fish for hours at “gator slough”, “baby doll hole”, and “180 hole” at Lake Eufaula. She enjoyed softball and was given the name “Legs” because she was all legs as she ran the bases. As the pitcher for Clayhatchee’s team, Fronie led the team to a number of tournament wins and a third place standing in the state’s 1976 slow pitch softball championship. Survivors include her two sons, Michael Johnny Childs, Level Plains, AL; Daniel Clayton Childs (Pam), Lincoln, AL; three grandchildren, Chelsea Nicole Bell (Regan) Pensacola, FL; Alexandria Kay Roberts (Brian), Lincoln, AL; and Kelli Flanigan, Anchorage, AK; two great grandchildren, Sophia Ruth Bell, Pensacola, FL; and Penelope Rose Bell, Pensacola, FL; a sister, Louise Addy, St. Marys, GA; one half-sister, Junifaye Gallman, Homerville, GA; one step-sister Joyce Griffin, Waycross, GA. Fronie was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years and 10 months, Johnny Clayton Childs; one great grandson, Sawyer Frost Roberts; her parents, Earnie and Alzada Hickox; 3 brothers, A.J. Hickox, Reavis Hickox, Glynn Hickox; 1 step-brother, J.B. Herrington; 3 sisters; Opal Lanier, Grace Bunch and Lucille Johns; and one step-sister, Georgia Burden.
