Susanna Renate Smith

Susanna Renate Smith, age 82, of Daleville, AL, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at the Daleville Chapel of Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 P.M. until service time. Susanna was born on April 25, 1939, to the late Hugo and Margarete Hertel of Mannheim-Sandhofen, Germany. She resided in Germany for 30 years until she met her late husband John and moved stateside and thereafter following his military career. She was a devoted military wife, mother, and Oma (grandmother). She enjoyed gardening, television, listening to music, fresh cups of coffee, and loved family gatherings at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, CSM (Ret) John H. Smith; her parents, Hugo and Margarete Hertel; also her sister and brother, Helga and Hugo Hertel. Survivors include daughters, Christine Monaghan (Michael); Liane Sisson (Larry); a son, Rudi Hartmann; two granddaughters, Meagan Foster (Clayton); Melanie Monaghan; three grandsons, Brandon Sisson (Halie); Sean Hartmann; Matthew Hartmann (Samantha); great-grandson, Oliver Hartmann.
